Melanie starts with long straight hair. She wants something much shorter. The barber starts with clippers on the right side. He buzzes off the long hair and creates a path around the ear. The buzzing contniues on the back and the left side. Now all of Melanie's hair is short with a buzzed perimeter. The top is still a bit long so scissors taper it to the shorter sides and back. Melanie looks like a new woman with her new short cut.
